What goes into building a retaining wall that stays put?

Retaining wall construction in Chico means building a wall that holds back a slope or a raised bed so the soil stays where you want it. The wall sits on a trench dug down to firm ground, with drainage behind it so water can't build up and push it out of line.

Maybe soil slides onto your patio after every hard rain, an old railroad-tie wall is leaning, or you just want a flat spot where the yard drops away. The price moves with the wall's height and length, the material, how much drainage it needs, what turns up under the topsoil and how easy it is to get equipment back there. The schedule mostly turns on whether the city has to review plans first, and my written estimate spells out what's included so you can see where your money goes.

How we handle retaining wall construction

Before I design anything, I want to know three things: how tall the wall will be, what it's holding up and where the water's going to go. Water is the part people skip, and it's usually what shoves a wall out of line, so drainage goes into the plan from the start instead of getting tacked on after a wall starts to lean. Then our crew digs the base trench down to firm, solid soil and packs the base. We set each course, one row of block, level before the next goes on, bring the backfill and drainage up behind the wall as it rises, and clean up once the cap is on.

Sometimes the wall you've already got is worth saving. If it's old stone or brick and the face is in worse shape than the footing, I'll tell you straight whether masonry restoration makes more sense than tearing it out. When a new wall levels off part of the yard, a lot of people want to finish that space, and that's where fireplace installation comes in, built to match the wall.

Retaining wall construction and Chico's permit rules

Chico's Building Division issues permits for most retaining walls in the city. A wall up to 4 feet tall that isn't holding up a fence or another structure doesn't need one, but the city measures from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall. That means a wall standing three and a half feet above the grass can still go over the limit once you count what's underground. A wall that skips the building permit may still need a planning or encroachment permit, and it still has to be built to code. If work starts without a permit it needed, an inspector stops the job right away, fees can run up to triple, and finished work has to be opened back up for inspection. So we find out whether the city or the county covers your address, and when your wall needs a permit, we take care of the paperwork as part of the job.

Most of the walls we're asked about hold up a sloped backyard, a raised planting bed or the grade beside a driveway, and plenty of them replace an old timber wall that's started to lean. We're based in Chico and do the same work across the cities around it, including Durham and Paradise, and the first question is always which office covers the address.

What happens when you call Cornerstone Chico Concrete and Masonry in Chico?

  1. Call or send the form

Call (530) 399-1517 or send the form, and we set up a time for me to come out. Tell us roughly how tall you want the wall and what's behind it.

  2. I look before I price

I measure the slope, look at what the wall will hold and figure out what's really going on before I price anything. You get a written estimate that spells out what's in it, so you can see exactly what you're paying for.

  3. We sort out the permit

If your wall needs a permit, we handle it. In Chico a simple job can sometimes get its permit on the first trip to the counter, but most go through plan review first, and that review sets when we can start.

  4. We build and walk it

Our crew builds the wall with me on site the whole way. When it's done, we walk the finished wall together so you can see the drainage and ask about anything you want.

Why Chico homeowners call Cornerstone Chico Concrete and Masonry for retaining walls

  • The estimator stays on site

I'm the one who looks at your slope, checks the planned wall against Chico's height rules and writes the estimate, and then our own crew builds it with me there. The person who priced your wall is the one watching the base go in.

  • Trained on big commercial jobs

I learned masonry laying brick, block and stone on buildings a lot bigger than a house, and I started this business in 2020. That's where I saw what the wrong mortar or a rushed shortcut does to good work, and I don't bring either one onto your property.

  • Licensed and insured for your job

We're fully licensed and insured. That matters when heavy block and equipment are going into your yard, because you shouldn't be the one carrying that risk.

If water's already moving soil around your yard, tell me what you're seeing and set up a visit.

Questions about retaining walls in Chico

How much does it cost to build a retaining wall in Chico?

There's no one price, because the height, the length, the material and the ground under the wall set it. The masonry industry's design manual says block walls typically cost less than a poured concrete wall. One block maker's guide also says heavy clay, wet soil or ground that's been dug before gets taken out of the trench bottom and replaced with compacted crushed rock, which adds digging on some lots. Your written estimate shows where your wall lands.

Is a block retaining wall better than a wood one?

For most yards, yes. The concrete masonry industry's design manual says block wall units resist cracking and, unlike treated timbers or railroad ties, hold up against splintering and decay. That's why I steer people toward block, and every wall we build is backed by our satisfaction guarantee.

How do I know if my retaining wall needs a drain pipe?

One block maker's guide calls for a drain pipe on any reinforced wall, on gravity walls over 4 feet tall and on any site that drains poorly. A reinforced wall has grid layers laid back into the soil, and a gravity wall holds the soil back with its own weight. If your wall fits any of those, the pipe goes on the estimate.

Do I need an engineer for a retaining wall in Chico?

You might, and the way to find out is to check the local code rules for your wall before you build. The masonry industry's installation guide says to do that for a project of any size, because those rules show what engineering the wall needs. I bring it up at the first visit, so you know before anything goes into the estimate.

What licenses should a retaining wall contractor in Chico have?

The city says contractors need a current City of Chico business license and a current State of California contractor's license. Ask any builder for both before you sign anything, and we're glad to show you ours.

How long does it take to build a retaining wall?

Most of the wait comes before the building starts, from the permit and the prep. If your wall needs a permit, the city's review comes first. Before anyone digs, the 8-1-1 Call Before You Dig service marks buried utility lines a few days ahead, so booking it early keeps things moving and lets us dig around those lines with care.

  • Masonry restoration

If you've got an old stone or brick wall that's bulging or crumbling, restoring it can keep the look of your yard while fixing what's behind the damage.

  • Fireplace installation

Once a wall turns a slope into a flat patio, a fireplace built from matching block or stone makes it somewhere you'll actually sit on cool evenings.
